Does anyone need a new bed plate? - Posted August 24, 2007

I am about to have replacement bed plates made up for both of my Vandercook 320Gs and my #3 and will have enough of the .050” cold rolled steel to make one extra bed plate.  Would anyone like to buy one for either of these presses?  The price will be fair.  Contact me for details.

Vandercook roller dimensions… - Posted August 18, 2007

I would like to see a chart of the dimensions of rollers for all of the Vandercook models somewhere that was easy to look up to see if your current rollers were up to par.

I’ve just had a problem with my SP-15 rollers which were about 3/32” too small in diameter and it was creating many problems. Once I figured out that they were way too small, getting new rollers solved all of those problems. But then how do you know when you are pushing the envelope too much.

I’ve just started to work on my Universal III which came with three sets of rollers.

The rollers on it are 22 5/8” long (metal) and the diameter of the rubber as best I can tell is

2.972” (214 points) – both of the ones on the press now are this diameter

The diameter near the middle of the other four rollers are

2.917” (210 points)
2.944” (212 points)
3.000” (216 points)
3.028” (218 points)

As a second question, when does the diameter of a roller become too small (or large)?

Or is it more of a problem that the outside diameter near the end of the rollers is too different from in the middle and what is too much there?

219 Old Style Feedboard - Posted August 14, 2007

I am restoring a 219 OS and am missing the metal feedboard lip and side guide. I’m trying to research all of my options. I was hoping someone out there may have an extra one? Any suggestions for alternatives? I’ve been in contact with Fritz and he is going to look for the blueprints. Ted Salkin pulled one out of his Vandercook graveyard but it is missing a sideguide. Also, he wanted nearly $400 for it, and that seemed high. Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

219 Oldstyle Gripper Problem: too tight a grip - Posted August 11, 2007

The 219 OS I’ve been using has developed a terrible problem, which started about 6 months ago, and nothing I do seems to help. The grippers raise fine, but when depressed into the paper to HOLD the paper, the grippers clamp down very hard, MUCH harder than is needed to just hold the paper in position – and the pressure of this then creates a mark on the paper under each gripper. The mark most resembles a series of angled parallel lines indented into the paper at the exact position of each gripper. I’ve never seen this before. The problem does NOT come and go, but seems to be steady-state.

I tried to find some adjustment for the tension of the grippers’ “chomp down hold” on the paper, but couldn’t find anything that would ease off the tension of the gripper when released to come down on the paper to hold it in place.

I removed all the packing, put on new tympan paper, cleaned the bar, unloosened the screws at the top of the gripper bar on the backside (internal press) of the bar itself (which seemed NOT a good thing to do — those screws want to be kept tight) BUT NOTHING worked.

Any ideas? (Tried to take picture, but the indentations don’t show up on the paper.)

Challenge proof press for sale in Brooklyn - Posted August 8, 2007

Challenge Proof Press

I am listing this for a local printer that is soon to vacate his shop. The press has an oscillating bed and requires the form to be put in a chase and inked with a brayer. It would probably be best for those who work with wood type or mounted linoleum. I suspect the seller would be willing to include a Miehle V50 chase with the press if a price were negotiated. It is shown with the handle removed, but the press is complete.

Pick up is from ground level in Brooklyn, NY. Anyone interested?  Other items from the same shop can be viewed at the following address:

Vandercook No. 3 Carriage Help - Posted August 3, 2007

Hello. I recently had my Vandercook No. 3 overhauled with a new paint job. While the press looks beautiful, the carriage with the cylinder no longer “locks” in place. I think something mechanical was painted over that should not have been, so if anyone has any suggestions about which part on my press is affected, and how to clean, I’d very much appreciate your advice. I attach photos as best I can to show what is going on.

Thanks very much,

Brittany Sanders
