Moving an SP20 Upstairs - Posted March 23, 2008

New poster, long time lurker.

So, we run a silkscreen shop in Columbia, SC call The Half and Half. I learned how to use C&P clamshells at school, and later traveled to Hatch Show Print to learn their Vandercooks. We want to expand our abilities to letterpress, and I have a lead on a few vandercooks, but I’m worried about getting it up stairs. We don’t have a freight elevator, and the stairs turn at the top. (pictures below).

Is there anyway to break down the press into a few large pieces to have movers get it up the stairs? We had our 1200lbs silkscreen press moved up there in 4 parts, and it has a footprint of about twice the size of the sp20. I’m fairly good at understanding mechanics, so I wouldn’t be completely lost in reassembling it after I’ve taken it apart, and I document thoroughly with pictures and notes along the way.

That being said, I was unable to find the weight of a sp20, but I’m guessing between 1200 and 1500 lbs.

Adjusting Form Rollers without Gauge - Posted March 13, 2008

My Uni I came to me without a roller setting gauge. Is it possible to get one, and if so, how? If (as I suspect) they’re vanishingly rare, can you recommend method for setting the height of the form rollovers without one?

Thanks!

232P conversion to M a success! - Posted

232-crank.jpeg232-chain.jpeg Our machine shop added two gears and linked them together. The link can be seen in the picture with yellow handle (to the right of the handle). The reason for the link is that the cylinder shifts position and gear and the handle needed to shift with it. It takes five and a half rotations on the handle to move the cylinder through one full print cycle. There is a little resistance to get it started, but once it’s going it practically goes on its own.

Sunday in the Park with Vandercooks - Posted March 3, 2008

eo.JPGOn Sunday March 2, after some research and some guessing, Sarah V. and I went to Memorial Park Cemetery in Skokie, IL to visit the Vandercook graves. There was a lot of snow on the ground and the staff was very sure that we wouldn’t be able to find the markers, but we were insistent. So after turning 10s into trees and 20s into bushes (decoding a map), we dusted off some snow and tried to make rubbings. Unfortunately better rubbings (and better photos) will have to wait for a drier season. We were hoping there would be some indication of their contribution, but alas no tiny engraved press, no banner. If anyone wants detailed directions for the next time they’re a little north of Chicago and want to say “Thanks” to the Vandercooks, please contact me and I’ll be glad to pass on all that I learned this week. Including the fact that the falafel sandwiches with pickles are indeed much better than plain falafel sandwiches at Pita Inn.Our next Moxon/Vandercook inspired day trip will be to take photos of the old factories. We’re still researching some addresses though.-April Sheridan

vandercook sp-15 bearing and bed bearers problem? - Posted

bearing2.jpgI have had a lot of slurring today that I have not been able to get rid of no matter what I try. The ink looks really uneven too. I have brand new rollers and printed 2 jobs last weekend that were perfect. Nothing is different today except that my print looks horrible. After a few hours I realized that when in print the bearings that roll over the bed bearers were not rolling in certain areas. They always rolled back or when in trip. Right where they stopped rolling it became harder to roll the cylinder out. (I’m not using too thick of paper either or trying to punch too hard)I don’t think this is suppose to happen and have no idea how to fix the problem. I’m pretty sure that this is the issue with the slurring because my image is more slurred at the top of the print which is where the bearings stop rolling.Does anyone know what’s wrong, how it happened and how I can fix it? Any insight would be greatly appreciated.  Thank you!Amanda Thomas
