What do you think is the narrowest space that a Uni I could fit through without taking the press apart? I am looking for a house and this question came up. We like one house with a walkout basement but the doorway is only 31″ wide.

I think it would definitely be a squeaker, and could easily end up on the ‘not fitting’ side which would be bad. I was looking at the pedal and wondering if it was easy to remove, so I will check into that now. Thanks.
Thinking a bit more on this: removing the door frame would gain two inches. Of course you’ll have removed the crank handle, but check if the gripper pedal and gripper trip lever on the back side need to be removed. The later is not that complicated to take apart, but the pedal has a taper pin that is hard to access.
Martha mentioned in an email that most of the basements she looked at have 6 steps down and a 90 degree turn.
Thanks for confirming that, Paul. On widening the doorway, my architect sister said she ‘doesn’t think it would be easy due to the masonry opening but it might be worth getting an estimate on.’ There are concrete steps, so that would be an issue as well.
31″ is too narrow for your Uni I. Is it an option to expand the opening and reframe? Current standard exterior doors are 36″wide. Big box stores sells them for about $200 depending on the model, add another $50-75 for locks. Professional install is an additional $200, well worth it if you don’t have the skills.
