Of course you'll have removed the crank handle, but check if the gripper pedal and gripper trip lever on the back side need to be removed. The later is not that complicated to take apart, but the pedal has a taper pin that is hard to access. On widening the doorway, my architect sister said she 'doesn't think it would be easy due to the masonry opening but it might be worth getting an estimate on.' Is it an option to expand the opening and reframe? Current standard exterior doors are 36"wide. Big box stores sells them for about $200 depending on the model, add another $50-75 for locks.
