Carriage hesitation on Uni III

Over the past month or so, the carriage on our Uni III has developed some hesitation from when you hit the green cycle button and when it actually begins moving down the bed. This morning it finally just stopped cycling, or at least it would do a couple cycles and then stop at the control end. I did recently replace the spring under the latch which holds the carriage at the control end of the bed and thought maybe it was too long of a spring. After cutting a loop off and replacing it, the press will now cycle but still has some hesitation in initially leaving the control end of the bed. Any suggestions?

    Guess I spoke too soon on this one as both the hesitation and carriage slam reappeared about a week and a half after the adjustment. What we’ve narrowed it down to is oil is migrating from the oil hole closest to the clutch along the outer housing and is getting into the friction material of the clutch itself. I’ve cleaned the oil hole to insure it is not blocked and have also cleaned the clutch itself with contact cleaner, this seems to have alleviated the problem for now. Has anyone else ever experienced something like this?

    Im happy to report that after a slight adjustment to the clutch, both the hesitation and the occasional carriage slam issue have been resolved. Thanks again for all your help!

    I was curious if this may have something to do with the clutch. I’ve yet to attempt fiddling with the clutch in any way and honestly it terrifies me a bit. How would one know if the clutch is slipping? Thanks

    Does the clutch slip when trying to overpower the spring? Perhaps a slight tightening of the clutch will get things rolling as they should.

    I got a similar spring from NA some years back, I think it was for a No. 4, and it kept the cylinder from moving over the latch. The diameter and length were right, but the wire was thicker than in the original spring, so it could not compress as much. Cutting off a few coils worked, and then you can relax the spring a bit by laying it flat and tapping its surface with a hammer.

    thanks for the response Paul. I just removed the spring and the hesitation appears to be gone. Perhaps the spring i have in there is too stiff? We do already have an email into Fritz asking if he has any of them in stock.

    Is the cycle inhibited at all when the carriage latch spring is removed? When removed, the carriage will probably bounce forward a bit.
