219 twin ink drums - Posted March 8, 2010

I have a 219 OS with twin ink drums. Does anyone have a procedure for removing them? There are a few reasons:

The bolt to adjust the height of the entire carriage to the form roller is completely hidden by the armature for the ductor roller (which is missing).

The press was stored in a damp environment and has pitting on these drums from rust. At some point it would be nice to have them turned.

If a ductor roller could be located, I might like to try to rebuild the whole assembly.

After removing the chain from the motor and idler sprockets, it looks like it might be possible to rotate the unit on bolt “A” (see photo). Being able to lift the unit would allow access to the height adjustment. The problem is there is a block protruding through the frame of the press that connects to the clutch in the rear ink drum even after the linkage “B” is disconnected.

Any ideas?

Vandercook 219 Power Grinding - Posted January 15, 2010

Hello!

I have two pictures (pictures below) of a piece that is grinding on my vandercook 219. There are fine metal shavings under the press after about an hour of running. I see no way of adjusting this to lift it up.

Any suggestions?

219 OS Feedboard - Posted September 23, 2008

I am missing a 219 OS Feedboard. Specifically the metal lip. I’ve exhausted all the sources I know about and have been unable to find a spare part. If you have one or know of one please email me at jordananne@yahoo.com . I posted something similiar a year ago but this is my last ditch effort to find an original before I have Fritz manufacture one.

Thank you!

Feedboard for 219 Old Style - Posted April 30, 2008

I’m missing a feedboard and metal lip for my 219 OS. Does anyone have a replacement oràhas anyone rigged a workable system without an original piece? Any help would be much appreciated.

219 Old Style Feedboard - Posted August 14, 2007

I am restoring a 219 OS and am missing the metal feedboard lip and side guide. I’m trying to research all of my options. I was hoping someone out there may have an extra one? Any suggestions for alternatives? I’ve been in contact with Fritz and he is going to look for the blueprints. Ted Salkin pulled one out of his Vandercook graveyard but it is missing a sideguide. Also, he wanted nearly $400 for it, and that seemed high. Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

219 Oldstyle Gripper Problem: too tight a grip - Posted August 11, 2007

The 219 OS I’ve been using has developed a terrible problem, which started about 6 months ago, and nothing I do seems to help. The grippers raise fine, but when depressed into the paper to HOLD the paper, the grippers clamp down very hard, MUCH harder than is needed to just hold the paper in position – and the pressure of this then creates a mark on the paper under each gripper. The mark most resembles a series of angled parallel lines indented into the paper at the exact position of each gripper. I’ve never seen this before. The problem does NOT come and go, but seems to be steady-state.

I tried to find some adjustment for the tension of the grippers’ “chomp down hold” on the paper, but couldn’t find anything that would ease off the tension of the gripper when released to come down on the paper to hold it in place.

I removed all the packing, put on new tympan paper, cleaned the bar, unloosened the screws at the top of the gripper bar on the backside (internal press) of the bar itself (which seemed NOT a good thing to do — those screws want to be kept tight) BUT NOTHING worked.

Any ideas? (Tried to take picture, but the indentations don’t show up on the paper.)

In need of some side guide parts & info… - Posted July 25, 2007

I finally have found a side guide for the last of the seven Vandercooks here at The Arm, but it appears to be missing some pieces. I am not very familiar with this style of side guide so can anyone tell me (or show me) what it is that I am missing? I think this comes from a 219, but I will be using it on a Universal III.

Help ID these Vandercook? mystery inking parts - Posted April 14, 2007

Dylan Fareed and I went out to visit John Barrett at Letterpress Things today and he asked me to drag some proof press roller assembly parts back to The Arm to attempt to identify them. I think the second one is a 219 rider roller assembly, but I have no clue on the rest. Anyone have any insight?

219 Oscillating Inking Roller - Posted February 21, 2007

Hi, I am looking into possibly buying a 219 Old Style press from a man in Oklahoma. It looks like (from his pictures) that it is missing the rubber inking rollers and an oscillating inking roller (metal?). I knew about the rubber rollers, and the core bracket is there for those, so I imagine I can get those from NA Graphics. Does anyone know if that oscillating roller is supposed to be there? And if it is, is it possible to find or buy a replacement? I couldn’t tell much about the inking parts from the photos on Vandercookpress.info.

Thanks for any help!

ID this proof press! - Posted October 8, 2006

A fella in Panama City, Florida has offered this press on the Briar Press classifieds site, but can’t find any info on it. The third picture I found in an article online and is of a similar press, but it made no mention of what it was. Does anybody know?
