Catergory: Inking System, Motors, SP series
Hi there—This is my first post. I have an SP-15 (serial #26151), and I looked through my manual, but am still unsure of the part names. It appears the gear on my motorized roller is broken. This is the gear that the belt / pulley (?) runs on to actually move the roller. [...]

Catergory: Lockup Bar, SP series
I’m unfamiliar with exactly how a lock-up bar works but I don’t think mine is not working correctly. The extension block will not move when I tighten the bar down. (isn’t it suppose to?) I’ve taken it apart and noticed that there was a spring like part inside but when I put my finger in [...]

Catergory: Rollers, SP series
A friend and I just had our rollers recovered from NA Graphics and we’re sitting here putting them back together and the gear will not line up where it is suppose to. It’s the same for both sets of rollers. We’ve tried each side and every roller trying to get the gear to line up. [...]

Catergory: Grippers, SP series
Last week I was in New York to teach workshops at the Center for Book Arts, and also visited a couple of printshops including Daniel Morris’s The Arm Letterpress in Brooklyn. Some readers may know that has several Vandercooks including this rather unusual SP15 that has a hand lever mechanism to raise the paper grippers [...]

Catergory: SP series
Could someone either take a nice close-up digital photo or carefully measure (wrap a piece of paper around it and measure) the circumference of both the form roller (the one that actually touches the type) and the gear that drives it as it moves across the press?
The outside diameter of my gear is noticeably larger [...]

Catergory: Print/Trip Lever, Restoration, SP series
Thanks to Paul’s recent post regarding trip spring replacement, I was able to discern that my SP-15’s trip/print problem is that both springs are broken. I spoke with Fritz today for advice and ordered new ones. I know there was a photo recently posted by John Cristopher showing a carriage off the press with the [...]

Catergory: Impression Cylinder, Print/Trip Lever, SP series
I recently repaired an SP20 at the University of West Georgia on which the carriage had become stuck during the return travel. The photos above shows that top carriage bearings on the operator’s side had been removed during a previous repair attempt.
Typically what happens on SP series presses is that the trip spring inside [...]

Catergory: Impression Cylinder, SP series
hi all
I’m calling on the fount of collective knowledge here with a technical question. I’m refurbishing an sp-15, and as I was cleaning up the underside of the cylinder carriage I noticed that a rocking lever arm (what is I assume part of the trip mechanism) was sprung with a flat spring on one side [...]

Catergory: Inking System, SP series
Details:
Vandercook SP-15
Brand new inks from Graphic Chemical and Ink (their own block & letterpress ink)
Photopolymer plates from Boxcar Press
Impression is somewhat deep
The issue is that if I put enough ink on the press to ink in one pass the type is ragged. What I’m having to do is shift to trip, ink the plate, shift [...]
