232P Transmission Box

Hello,

On this 232P, there’s this T thread piping leading out from the Transmission Box. Is that just a hole to pour oil into the unit?? If so, why a T shape?

Right now, according to the gauge (photos at the end) appears empty. The manual says it should be filled 1/2 up the gauge with SAE #40 oil.

    To add a motor in this space you will need to drill mounting holes in the bottom on the well, which appears to be part of the casting. Even if you were successful you may not be able to reach underneath to attach nuts to the bolts. I would just replace the existing ink motor where it’s mounted. If the cahin is too slack you should be able to slide the motor back or forward then remove a link in the chain.

    1939 huh? :)

    The press doesn’t even have a label 232p, btw. Just says 232.

    This press has a chain driven inker (probably as most?) and it’s rather noisy when turned on…

    I’m pondering (eventually of course) sticking a small DC motor inside the extra space inside (where the 2nd roller would have been???) and driving it with a belt…. Is that weird?

    Any thoughts?

    Keegan, your press (s/n 13556, built in 1949) is actually ten years newer than this one (s/n 8589 built in 1939).

    Huh, well this presses motor, belt and trans box is completely different from my 232p. My guess your model is newer than mine, and looks like you got a new motor to boot. Does the box have a screw on the bottom to bleed oil for a oil change?

    After asking around in town, to a few mechanically inclined people, we concluded that the T is for an easy twisting of the “cap” so to speak. Alas, it came off in a cinch and I poured about 2/3 of QT of #40 oil to reach 1/2 up the gauge.

    Good question. I will alert the nine 232 owners in the census and perhaps one or more can provide some insight. Yours is a nice clean press.
