I’ve found out that the two bumper springs on my Universal I are broken. New ones ordered from NAGraphics arrived last week. Question now: how do I get the remaining bits of spring out and get the new springs in? Is there a trick or a magical solution/answer?
The bumper blocks seem to be welded to the press, but with vice grips I managed to get one spring out. The second spring had only very little left in the block, so I couldn’t get to it with the vice grips. I removed the pin and carefully tapped the remaining bit out. I inserted both springs and carefully used to carriage to force them into position. Job done and feeling pleased with the result. Thanks Fritz Klinke for the springs and Paul for running the blog and answering so many questions! Great work…
You will need to remove the bumper block from the press place it in a large vise and grabe the remaining piece with needle nose locking pliers (Vise Grips). Note that the replacement spring has a a coil on on end with a larger diameter. This is the end that is inserted into the block; turn it clockwise to get it started. It will take a heavy sledgehammer to pound it all the way in place.
