Hi all – I’m in the last stages of cleaning up my Vandercook and I did what I told myself I never would. I ended up with 4 bolts and 8 washers that I cannot for the life of me figure out where they go. I’ve looked over the press and also the schematics and am stumped. Does anyone out there have an idea of where these could go? What have I overlooked? Super embarrassed after how careful I was but here we are.
That was my initial thought too Enrique, but no luck – all the motor support bolts are there.
I chatted with Fritz yesterday, and he generally recommended just holding on to them and start printing. If everything works, then just let it be.
I was curious if he could find them on the original blue prints perhaps, though he’s not able to get to those right now. Seems like that’s really the only way to find out at this point outside of taking it all apart again. I may follow up with him down the road. It’s hard to not find their rightful home – but seems I’ve reached a dead end and not really sure what else to do.
I think they are too short but maybe the motor support?
That’s on me, I just didn’t measure correctly – they are 5/16 – 18 x 5/8″ bolts. Took another pass and still never found where they live. Thought maybe the washers would guide me but no such luck.
Not to be pendantic, but 1/4 diameter are either 20 or 28 threads per inch. I’m on the road and won’t see a No. 4 untill I return home in a couple days. Meanwhile just look for empty threaded holes.
Still no luck tracking down where these things go… Paul, do you know where or if the 1/4-18 x 5/8″ bolts are used in multiple places on the #4?
So I just took a look at the bolts again – they are actually 1/4-18 x 5/8″ bolts. Makes sense why they don’t fit in bearer blocks. Not sure if that helps point to where they might go.
Thanks for the insight Paul! The rollers are put together and working — though the bolts that were in the bearer bars when I got the press did not have washers. That was my first thought, that I got the bolts mixed up and put the wrong ones in the bear bars. When I tried them in the bars – they were just a bit too small and slid into the bearing bar rather than engaging the threads.
I’ll check the other spots you mentioned, though after many passes – I cannot see any missing hardware. I am as embarrassed as I am stumped.
These appear to be 5/16-24 × 1″ hex head bolts. The most likely place you would encounter them on is the form roller bearing bars. The form roller cores won’t stay in place without them. See manual Sheets 103 and 183.
See manual Sheet106 for other places that you can these bolts, though the spec is no called out:
– on the the carriage at the frame that supports the roller frame and the oscillator
– bumper plates
– trip rack cover plate
