New user here… The printmaking studio I volunteer at has a V. No. 2. I cannot find, feel, or hear a trip mechanism on this press. Is there none? I’d love to make a tympan/frisket arrangement, but I can’t imagine keeping registration on impression both directions. I’d be grateful for enlightenment! Thanks very much.

Flat Bars in Cylinder on a Vandercook No. 2
When I acquired this No. 2 many years ago, an offset printing blanket (the press was being used for perforating/cutting prior to my getting it) was clamped between or under these flat bars. I replaced the blanket way back when and took these bars off and used the square cinching bars to tighten the blanket. […]
MoreMore TagVandercook 2 Hand Proof Press lockup bar
Hello all, I have a Vandercook 2 in need of some sort of lockup or dead bar. I don’t know if this type of press came with one originally. Even if it didn’t, I’d appreciate guidance on how to specify one for a fabricator (or do it myself). Thanks for your help!
MoreMore TagVandercook #2 Proof Press
I have been cleaning up an old Vandercook #2 Proofing Press and have some question regarding the real rods, packing, and the clamp bars. First, the press has 2 real rods. I assume one is for packing and the other is for a top sheet? Is this for easy change out? Second, I was wondering […]
MoreMore TagVandercook #2 Proof Press
I have just acquired a Vandercook #2 proofing press. It seems to have everything but the base cabinet and it needs a lot of love! I am in the process of restoring it and have a question regarding the side plates that fit around the impression cylinder. On the side plates at the bottom there […]
MoreMore TagVandercook No. 2 Proof Press – For Sale – $900
I purchased this press when I was making woodblock prints 13+ years ago. I had a dream of refinishing it and properly setting it up. However that dream has since long passed, but perhaps that’s your dream now. If so, let’s talk. Pickup or arranged shipping would have to be from Morton, IL 61550. $900 […]
MoreMore TagTension Bars on Vandercook #2
I have a vandercook # 2 serial #3046. After taking a short coarse on Letterpress at the South West School of Art in San Antonio on there #14 , I have a question on the #2 having two tension bars for the packing—Is this for a double tapered packing or maybe a felt pad? Ratchets on both […]
MoreMore Tagfor sale or trade: Vandercook no. 2 Galley Proof Press — SOLD — on 1/5/11
We are in the process of moving our small shop on the Northern Oregon Coast and our Vandercook 2 galley proof press won’t fit through the new door. Sadly, we have to sell. Ideally we would trade for a smaller proof or sign press. Bed: 24″ × 50½” From 1950 and 1957 Vandercook and 1953 […]
MoreMore TagVandercook #2
I have a chance to acquire a #2 in great condition, judging from the photos sent me. My shop has an SP-15, but it tends to be a bottleneck for members of our co-op…so we thought of getting another, proofing press, without an inking capability. Mainly for proofing, but hopefully for block printing and simpler […]
MoreMore TagVandercook #2 HELP
I have a Vandercook #2. It’s a very simple press. No inking and no grippers. The only parts that move as the cylinder goes down the bed are the roller bearings. I can move them with my hands but they are sticky. The press had been in a barn for a long time when I […]
MoreMore TagHelp ID parts from Vandercook No.2
Can anyone help identify these unattached parts that came along with my Vandercook 2 acquisition? #1 appears to be a scraper of some kind. The “blade” looks replaceable & is not sharp. #2 is a thin gauge painted metal plate with a bit of a lip or maybe paper guide along one edge, and a […]
