Can anyone tell me just how many pounds of pressure are exerted while printing on Vandercook flatbed presses (SP-15) or indeed other models such as C&P platens?

MoreSP15 ink drum gear
Hi All, New to the site from UK. We have an SP15 needing restoration in the workshops (we usually do hand presses). It is hand cranked and has powered inking. One of the nylon? plasticky gears that drives the ink cylinder has basically disintegrated and I was wondering if anyone Stateside does spares? Any help […]
MoreSP-15 motor oil level
I read that one should periodically check the oil level in the SP-15 motor gear box. I removed the plug and can see the oil is at a level below what I believe is the worm-gear shaft. What is the appropriate level that should be maintained and what specification of oil should be used? Is […]
MoreA Question about Cylinder Rack Shims
I’m having some issues with low ink distribution in the first inch or so of my form. I noticed that the area coincides with the first few inches of the cylinder rack which is separate from the rest of the rack and slightly raised with some plastic shims. Does anyone know the reason for that […]
MoreBalancing the Cylinder on an SP-20
Is anyone familiar with balancing the cylinder on an SP-20? Our 20 never seems to print well and we’ve balanced the base & made sure the rollers are seated properly to no avail. I’ve asked around locally & balancing the cylinder came up. Any instruction would be greatly appreciated–a step-by-step breakdown would be even more so. […]
Morewobbly ink drum–sp15
Hello all, My Sp15 has been put through her paces in the last two days, and tonight during cleanup I noticed that the ink drum is wobbling…or more precisely, the three screws that hold the pulley gear to the ink drum are wonky. The head to one screw is sheared off (and thus the source […]
MoreSP-15 retaining screws
Hello! I recently had my rollers recovered for the first time, and am having trouble screwing in the retaining screws in the shaft. The screws worked fine previously. Any thoughts?
Morefrom David Brewer
This is my first post and I’m not much on the internet. However, I have been registered with Vanderblog for awhile and have appreciated all questions and comments as I have been getting my SP15 up and going . I bought it a few years ago from a then acquaintance and now friend. I had […]
MoreSP 15 Ink Drum
I recently got an SP 15 and the motor was noisy when running so I checked and no lubricant and added some, less noisy but still makes noise. Seemed like the angle of armiture the motor sits on affects sound so I fiddled with tightening and loosening the bolts on side of carriage to change […]
MorePrint your own Press!
Hi all – – I thought I’d offer up a link to some fun for your 3 day weekend. In honor of Vandercook’s 100th, I put together a little papercraft version of my SP20 to share with everyone. Don’t know what papercraft is? It’s this: Make your own SP20 at any size you’re willing to […]
MoreHappy Discovery
So, as some of you may remember, I’m restoring an SP20 currently (yeah, I know, I should be done by now… but I’m not.) Well, I’m finally having the rollers recast, and I noticed something yesterday I thought I’d pass along. I was cleaning the gunk off of the ends of my cores to send […]
