No, but I got the idea from your description of how to make a tool to use 2 pieces of furniture on the loop end to get it onto the dowel–one underneath to brace and bend it upwards just slightly so to be in line with the dowel, then a second piece on top of that to push it in using a mallet as you suggested.
Did you make a tool from wood? A small batch in metal is a good idea.
I did finally get the spring in place. It would be nice to have one of those install tools, the next time around.
